First Review Of palmOne Tungsten E Leaked On The Web
A week ago, goodthatway reported sightings of the first images of the forthcoming palmOne Tungsten E handheld.  Well, Mobileslash got a hold of one and posted their thoughts as well as some high-res pictures.  Here are the specs:

  • Palm OS 5.2

  • 32 MB of RAM (28.3 actual available)

  • 320x320 resolution screen

  • SD slot with SDIO support

  • Stereo Headphone jack

  • TI 144MHz OMAP processor Arm Processor

  • USB cable and AC Adapter (no cradle)

  • No Universal Connector!

  • Application suite includes Docs To Go, RealOne MP3 player, and more

  • Flip cover

  • $199 USD

From the pictures, it appears the Tungsten E will be using the same attractive transflective display found on the Zire 71 and Tungsten T2.  It also seems that it will use a rectangularly shaped directional pad which looks strikingly similar to one used in the forthcoming Tungsten T3.  Thankfully, palmOne wisely added an audio port to the device unlike Sony's recently previewed Clie TJ25.  Overall, it seems palmOne may have a winner here as a great replacement device for its M series line of low-cost handhelds.

Scott's Thoughts
For $199, this does look like a pretty good deal, though I really dislike the oblong D-pad.  I would imagine that palmOne's decision to hobble it by not giving it the Universal Connector is an intentional move on their part so that they can boast that as a value-added feature of their higher priced models, but with the recent announcement of their affordable IR foldable keyboard it may not be such a big deal anyway.  It's also worth noting that HP's recently announced h1935 is $199 after a $50 rebate, while the Tungsten TE lists at $199 without any rebate needed.
