So you want to make a phone call, what should you use? A regular land line phone? Mobile phone? How about the new VideoPhone for the Gameboy Advance? A Kyoto based company that makes mobile phone and internet equipment called Digital Act Co. has announced that it will release the Campho Advance. The attachment comes with a digital camera, earphone and microphone that connects via the standard GBA cartridge slot. It doesn't come with any integrated wireless capability, instead connecting to a regular telephone line. The display shows live video of the person on the other end of the line (who also needs to own both a GBA and Campho Advance). Your own image will show up in the corner of the display. The Campho Advance will be priced at 13,000 yen ($110) and will go on sale by December in Japan. There are also reports that Digital Act is working on a broadband version.
It's interesting to see all these various attachments for the GBA. Some time ago a company called X-traFun released a wireless Bluetooth cartidge for the GBA that allowed for internet browsing. All of these accessories definitely give a boost to Nintendo's aging but still dominant GBA console. It will be intriguing to see if these accessories will enable Nintendo in the near term to stave off increasing competition from rival console manufactueres like Sony's forthcoming PSP, Nokia's N-Gage, and Tapwave's Zodiac.
