If you haven't gotten a digital video recorder yet, now's a good time. TiVo is currently offering a $50 mail-in rebate until the end of the year. The rebate is good on a variety of different brands and there's a limit of two per household. The 40 hour model can be found for around $225 at either goodguys or Amazon, bringing the final cost down to $175 after rebate. The 80 hour model will set you back about $90 more.
TiVo requires a monthly service fee which I personally feel is overpriced at $13/month. But I can't imagine watching TV any other way, so I pay it. The TiVo has one of the best SAFs (Spouse Acceptance Factors) of any electronics device. You have to go through a somewhat lengthy, but mostly easy, process of setting it up initially, but after that "it just works." Within a couple of weeks you'll wonder how you lived without it.
If you've got the money and are thinking about going for the 80 hour model, I would suggest getting two 40 hour units instead. It'll cost a bit more initially and, even worse, you'll have to pay another $13/month for the second unit, but you'll be able to record two different shows at the same time and allow you to have your kids watch shows from one TiVo while you watch shows from another. Because these are Series 2 models, they support a bunch of other features as well. Check the TiVo site and, even better, the TiVo discussion forums for more info.
If you have DirecTV or are thinking about getting it, the DirecTV/TiVo combo units are the way to go. Each unit has two DirecTV tuners built-in and can record off of each of them at the same time! The monthly service fee is less at $10/month, and each additional TiVo only adds another $5/month for the "service." The rebate mentioned above doesn't apply, but other good deals can be found, especially if you're signing up as a new DirecTV customer.
